Life together in the alumni school is also largely characterized by the fact that each individual is given responsibility and can grow with it. It does not only refer to singing and the choir’s everyday life, but also to the entire life together in the alumni house.

The principle of shared responsibility has proven its worth for centuries and is also held in high esteem by the Thomaners themselves. Like in a family group, Thomaners of different ages live together in the “Stuben” and find a second home there. Birthdays are celebrated, joint preparations are made for Christmas and the latest computer games are exchanged. It’s easy to find people to talk to, and not just about school-related issues. The older ones act as mentors for the younger ones and provide them with advice and friendly support, as many of their experiences will be familiar to them. After all, they have already had similar experiences themselves.

Individual Thomaners take on additional areas of responsibility. As choir prefects and famuli of employees, they help in many areas of the Thomaners’ life, for example in rehearsals, in the organization of sheet music and the sale of programmes, CDs, books and other merchandise of the choir. Even those Thomaners who take a break due to puberty vocal change, so-called dispensed singers, fulfill tasks until they are reintegrated into the musical work of the choir as tenor or bass with a new vocal range. As a matter of principle, there is close cooperation with the parents in the education of the children and young people and a partnership-based relationship is cultivated between teachers, parents and the Thomas Cantor.
